Product Change Notification

Product Change Notifications (PCNs) are issued when errata or new revisions are released for Gateworks SBCs. Subscribe to the following Google group to get automatic PCN notifications.

There are two ways to subscribe:

1. Send email to pcn+subscribe@gateworks.com
   • This does not require a Google account and will send PCN notifications as e-mails
2. Join group at URL ​https://groups.google.com/a/gateworks.com/d/forum/pcn
   • This requires a Google account and provides a forum-like User Interface which provides a richer experience including history

PCN Events are triggered by several sources:

1. Errata - Ventana - Ventana / Laguna
2. ECO - New Board Revision
3. GSC firmware updates - changes to GSC firmware that ships on non revision locked board models by default
4. Firmware image updates - changes to pre-built firmware image that ships on non revision locked board models by default (bootloaders + OS)
5. Product End Of Life (EOL) notification (single board computers as well as popular OEM add-on cards re-sold through the store)

PCN34 - April 2019 GPS Rollover

• Date: 03-28-2019
• PCN: On April 6, 2019 there will be a GPS rollover that could affect all GPS / Timing units in the world, regardless of manufacturer.

In addition to providing accurate location information, the Global Positioning System provides accurate timing information. It also includes the ability to transmit the proper date and time to a receiver by supplying the receiver with the current week and the current number of seconds into the week. This allows the receiver to translate the date and time into a more typical format – day, month, year, and time of day.

The field from the Satellite system that contains the week number is a 10-bit binary number. This limits the range of the week number to 0 – 1023, or 1024 total weeks.

GPS week zero started January 6, 1980. The 1024 weeks counter ran out and rolled over on August 21, 1999. The week counter then reset to zero, and it has been recounting ever since. The next time the counter will reach week 1023 and rollover to zero is on April 6, 2019.

April 6, 2019 is the 1024th week and unless a GPS module or application has already accounted for this, the date may not report accurately. If the application does not use the date or if there are other sources for the date outside of the GPS module, one may not be affected.

  • Notes: Wi2Wi provided notice indicating that Qualcomm (formerly CSR) ran extensive simulator testing and that they saw no operational issues.

• u-blox GPS - Used on Newport and Custom Ventana Boards
  • 02120901: ZOE-M8Q-0
  • 02120830: EVA-M8M
  • Notes: As these are newer GPS chipsets, it is not expected they will face any issues. More information is available in the ​u-blox portal

• Trimble GPS - Used on Avila, Cambria and Laguna Boards
  • 02120512: Copernicus 63530-00 and Copernicus 58048-20
  • 02120619: Condor 68674-05
  • Notes: Recommended to update application code to accommodate for the week number change from the GPS module. Sample code is available by emailing Gateworks Support.

Customers using Gateworks BSPs with gpsd can address this within gpsd if using another time service. Customers not using the GPS time are not affected.

For systems that have no RTC, GPSD can provide the system time. If you manually set the system clock to a date in the current year before launching gpsd you will get the correct time (gpsd has some sanity check when setting system time).

PCN38 - Laguna Single Board Computers End of Life Announcement

• Date: 07-15-2019
• PCN: Gateworks has been notified by the manufacturer, Marvell (formerly Cavium) that the processor used on Laguna SBCs is being discontinued, and thus so will the Laguna family.

The Laguna family includes:

• GW2380, GW2382, GW2383, GW2387, GW2388, GW2391 and any other boards using the Cavium Econa CNS34xx processors, including customs and specials.

This is an advanced notice. Gateworks will make a last time purchase of CPUs and offer standard stock Laguna SBCs on a first-come, first-served basis, with supplies expected, but not guaranteed, to last through 2021.

For those customers requiring a higher level of certainty, Gateworks will offer a bonding program for CPUs which can then be used for scheduled releases. Gateworks can accept bonding orders up until October 18th, 2019.

PCN40 - Ventana Errata 23-26 - End of Life Parts on Ventana

• Date: 10-11-2019
• PCN: Several parts used on the Ventana boards are now end of life (EOL). Gateworks has found replacement parts which are incorporated into new revisions.

PCN41 - Ventana GW53xx & GW54xx Revision G

• Date: 10-11-2019
• PCN: Gateworks Ventana GW53xx and GW54xx family boards have been updated to revision G due to the errata in PCN40.

• Date: 10-23-2019

PCN43 - GW16082 Mini-PCI Expansion Module Discontinued

• Date: 12-27-2019
• PCN: The GW16082 Mini-PCI expansion module is now end of manufacturing (EOM) due to most radio manufacturers transitioning from Mini-PCI to Mini-PCIe. Gateworks recommends using Mini-PCIe radios, which are compatible with most Gateworks SBCs and the GW16081 expansion module.

PCN54 - GW16130 Satellite Modem Default Configuration

• Date: 07-08-2020
• PCN: All Gateworks GW16130 Iridium Satellite Modems manufactured after 07/08/2020 will have the CBUS0 (SAT_ON) pin configured through the EEPROM to always drive a logic high to enable the modem by default at power-up. It was previously driven low by default.
• If it is desired to have the modem GPIO controlled (rather than through the EEPROM), one can use the instructions on the following wiki page GW16130 Wiki Page. This wiki will explain how to reconfigure CBUS0 to be a GPIO and use the Linux kernel gpiolib (/sys/class/gpio) or a libftdi function to enable the modem through a GPIO. Setting the GPIO to a logic high (it will be logic low and disabled by default).

PCN55 - GW54xx Revision H & Related Errata

• Date: 07-21-2020
• Ventana GW54xx was updated to Revision H. This does require a new boot firmware (Errata HW29)
